Small habits, big changes

Why two minutes a day beat an hour once a month, and how to build habits that stick.

When we want to change something in our lives we tend to think big: a whole new routine, a perfect plan, a Monday to start over. But habits that last almost always start small.

Start smaller than you think

A good starter habit is so easy it feels almost silly: a glass of water when you wake up, ten minutes of walking after lunch, one line about how you feel. The goal isn't the result, it's showing up.

Attach the habit to something you already do

The easiest way to remember a new habit is to tie it to an existing one:

  • after your morning coffee, five minutes of stretching;
  • after brushing your teeth at night, charge your phone outside the bedroom;
  • when you leave work, get off one stop early.

Count days, not kilos

Consistency is the real measure of progress. Marking every day you showed up builds a chain you won't want to break, and reminds you that you're already doing something important.

Do it with someone

Shared habits hold up better. Knowing your group is waiting for your check-in is a gentle nudge on the days motivation runs low.
